Introducing Canine Counseling: Compassionate Guidance for Life’s Toughest Decisions

As dog guardians, we’re used to thinking of training as the go-to solution for every challenge. But sometimes, life throws us situations where training isn’t the answer. Whether you’re facing a major life transition, struggling with a difficult decision, or trying to create harmony in your home, these moments require more than obedience training. That’s why I’m excited to introduce Canine Counseling—a specialized service designed to help you and your dog through life’s most complex and emotional moments.

What is Canine Counseling?

Canine Counseling is not a traditional training session. It’s a unique offering that focuses on the bigger picture—helping you navigate significant life changes that affect your dog. Instead of working on commands and behaviors, we sit down and have a thoughtful discussion about the challenges you’re facing and how we can best support both you and your dog.

This service is led by MDT owner Kristen, Certified Behavior Consultant and Certified Family Dog Mediator. She is here to listen, understand, and provide expert advice tailored to your situation, helping you make informed, compassionate decisions that are in your dog’s best interest.

When is Canine Counseling the Right Fit?

There are several situations where Canine Counseling can provide clarity and support, especially when emotions run high or there are multiple factors to consider. Here are just a few examples of when counseling might be a better fit than hands-on training:

  • Rehoming Considerations: If you're struggling with the possibility of rehoming your dog, counseling can help you weigh your options and make the best decision for your dog’s future.

  • Euthanasia Decisions: Facing end-of-life choices for your dog is never easy. Counseling offers emotional support and guidance during this heart-wrenching time.

  • Divorce and Custody: When families split up, deciding who keeps the dog can be complicated. We’ll work together to figure out the best arrangement for your dog’s well-being.

  • Combining Households: Moving in with a partner or merging homes with one or more dogs? I’ll help you create a plan for a smooth transition and reduce stress for all your pets.

  • Adding a New Dog: Introducing a new dog to your home? We’ll discuss how to prepare your current pets and family to ensure a peaceful and successful integration.

  • Dog and Baby Concerns: Expecting a new baby? I can help you prepare your dog for the big changes ahead, creating a safe and happy environment for your growing family.

What to Expect During a Canine Counseling Session

During a counseling session, we’ll take the time to explore the emotional and logistical challenges you’re facing. Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes and are designed to help you feel supported and empowered. You’ll leave with a clear plan or set of recommendations tailored to your dog’s specific needs and your family’s circumstances.

We won’t be focusing on obedience training or commands. Instead, the goal is to provide thoughtful, compassionate advice for dealing with complex issues where there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Why You May Need Counseling Over Training

Traditional dog training focuses on commands, behaviors, and hands-on practice, but life often requires a different kind of support. Canine Counseling is particularly helpful when:

  • Your concerns go beyond behavior and touch on emotional, legal, or logistical issues

  • You’re dealing with transitions that impact your entire family, including your dog

  • You need an empathetic listener to help guide you through decisions that can’t be solved through training alone
